Treatment resistant sciatica is the most common form of lower back and leg pain syndrome. Sciatica has a well earned reputation as a chronic and stubborn symptomatic expression and is known to be extremely difficult to cure.

This is the traditional view

In fact, in this view patients who experience symptoms lasting more than 6 months have a better chance of enduring a lifetime of suffering than they do of ever truly recovering 100%.

Natural alternatives which take a more holistic view, taking into account the psychological and emotional well-being of the sciatica sufferer and the important role of relaxation and an attitude of hope, offer hope where conventional approaches fail.

Here are a few treatment options I have personally found to be very effective in my own journey from a legacy of 20 years of back pain to being pain free and healthy once again.

Click here for recommended natural cures for sciatica.

Sciatica is not a condition or diagnosis unto itself. It is a term reserved for a set of symptoms which generally includes pain, tingling, weakness and/or numbness in the lower back, buttocks legs and/or feet. Sciatica can be caused by a diversity of mechanical, vascular, neurological and psychosomatic sources, although the vast majority of affected patients are diagnosed with a spinal causation of one type or another.

The usual diagnosed spinal sources of sciatica may include such conditions as: degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, osteoarthritic bone spurs, foraminal stenosis, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, chemical radiculitis from a ruptured disc and extreme lumbar hyper-lordosis.

The most commonly diagnosed non-spinal structural sources of sciatica include piriformis syndrome and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. While it is true that virtually all of these conditions can create sciatic nerve pain in the lower body, it is also a fact that these symptoms are rarely long lasting and will almost always respond well to appropriate treatment modalities.

If sciatica caused by a structural source is not generally a chronic concern and typically resolves with indicated therapy, why do most patients never recover from their pain?

This is an age old question which has plagued sciatica sufferers and care providers for generations. The answer to this question is becoming ever clearer, as new research points to the epidemic incidence of ischemia as the logical causation of most sciatica and general radicular pain syndromes. Ischemia is also known as oxygen deprivation back pain, and can come about due to a variety of anatomical causes often associated with poor cardiac or vascular function.

However, the overwhelming majority of ischemic pain syndromes are the direct result of a psychogenically driven or psychosomatically perpetuated pain imperative enacted by the subconscious mind as a defense mechanism against repressed, suppressed and completely unconscious expressions of anger, fear, insecurity, poor self esteem, guilt, regret and other negative and highly sensitive emotional issues.

Medical doctors do not receive comprehensive training in mind/body medicine and are taught in the well established Cartesian tradition of engineering the human body as a great and complex machine. This approach to care is poorly conceived, ineffective and directly responsible for the epidemic of chronic pain which is burdening our healthcare system to the point of failure.

Doctors need to wake up to the facts that the mind and body do indeed work together to create all conditions of disease and health. Doctors need to address the emotional side of chronic pain. Most of all, doctors need to stop blaming ongoing pain on coincidental and completely normal spinal scapegoats, such as disc abnormalities and spinal arthritis. The medical approach to treating back pain is a dismal failure and it is time for care givers to acquiesce to the idea that they are completely misguided in almost all that is accepted about common back pain and sciatica. Once this occurs, then true progress towards effective treatment can begin…

Luckily, in the meantime, there are a growing number of doctors who have embraced the truth about chronic pain and have been treating it very successfully using a completely psycho-emotional approach. The treatment statistics are incredible using knowledge therapy, as opposed to the plethora of mostly punishing and wasteful medical modalities, such as spinal surgery, ongoing chiropractic manipulations, risky pharmaceutical treatment and invasive injection therapy. It is amazing how well psychological and energy therapies work at permanently resolving physical pain, while physical treatments do little more than provide temporary placebo effects and fatten the wallets of care givers…

Are you one of those people who when they get back pain they tend to just grin and bear it, maybe take the odd pain killer or change the bed or try to fix it by yourself, but don’t go to see the doctor?

There are myriad reasons why people suffer from back pain and sciatica. Significantly, there are many more reasons why people with these problems fail to seek proper medical treatment immediately.

There are many natural treatments for back pain and sciatica and many of them are really effective but it is always best to check with a medical practitioner first to get a diagnosis so that the treatment you choose is the most relevant

The three most common reasons why people do not seek immediate treatment are, in this author’s opinion, the most telling and perhaps the most damaging, long term.

First, there are the individuals who never see a medical practitioner for anything, these people may ultimately do the most damage to themselves as their refusal generally is couched in denial.

It is always a good idea to check things out with a doctor even if you don’t go on to take his or her recommended treatment, just to rule out the possibility of a serious cause that you haven’t thought about.

Then you can choose natural treatments instead if that is what you want, but this time it will be an informed choice

The second reason is that, for some, it simply lessens or completely disappears, thus giving the individual the impression that the problem was never really anything too severe to begin with.

Three, there are certain individuals that are determined to fix whatever is wrong themselves, either with homemade remedies or by following the well-intentioned but often mistaken advice of friends and family.

The three reasons, often occurring in the same sufferer, sometimes over a period of months or even years, may ultimately lead an individual to an outcome much more severe than would otherwise be indicated by immediate attention to the problem.

The first reason is more about a state of mind, even a lifestyle decision, than about the amount of discomfort and suffering an individual may be experiencing. We all know people like this, it’s almost a badge of honor they wear around their necks that says, “I never go to the doctor’s office. Who needs them anyway?” As noted above, it is usually this sort of back pain and sciatica sufferer who will ride their lifestyle choice right into an emergency room, ultimately forcing surgical intervention. The “I never see a doctor” mentality may also express itself as outright denial. In such a case, the problem never exists, at least until the back pain and sciatica drive the individual to a doctor’s office, or worse. The prognosis for such an individual is never good, long term damage is a real possibility.#

Get a diagnosis and then choose your treatment

The second reason for not seeking medical intervention is one of perception. Often, it will express itself as a twinge, feeling more like a muscle pull in the back of the leg or a knot in the muscles above the iliac crest (top of the hip in the back), nothing more. Unfortunately, all back symptoms are not created equal. Individuals with varying degrees of damage, disease and/or trauma may express the pain in any number of ways.

Ultimately, unless a thorough examination is performed by a qualified and competent practitioner, the next manifestation may be much worse. Again, as in case number one above, the sufferer may end up in a doctor’s office, an emergency room or an operating theater if they are not properly addressed in the initial stages.

Finally, the third individual may be motivated by any number of factors; ultimately these sufferers may end up doing the most damage to themselves as they attempt to fix the problem by themselves or with the help of well-intentioned experts. These individuals are often the home remedy seekers, going from diagnosis to treatment themselves based on misinformation, misconception, and mistaken beliefs. It is not uncommon for the sufferer in this group to try several treatment strategies before finally seeking relief through medical intervention. Often, as with numbers one and two above, there is additional damage that could have been avoided if treatment had been sought early on.

The three reasons above, more a window into the personalities of these individuals, must be viewed within the context of their belief systems, their education, and even their culture. Sufferers are individuals and bring to the treatment arena myriad differences, not only in symptoms but in terms of their very nature as individuals with preconceived notions, ideas, and beliefs.

Only by addressing these factors can we hope to get a clear picture of how best to treat patients attempting, in their own ways, to deal with a condition both perplexing and frightening, back pain and sciatica.

After diagnosis choose from a whole range of natural cures for sciatica available

If you recognize yourself in one of the three groups, seek medical attention immediately. You will never regret treating it, but you may regret doing nothing!
